it was pointed out to me that the end should have been male, that way if you need to remove it , when you reattach it to the fitting at the bottom you could rewrap it with teflon tape and have to slather its female end.

Hi there, thank you for your feedback on our Never Dig HYDRANT SLEEVE for Frost-Proof Yard Hydrant. We appreciate your suggestion about the end being male for easier removal and reattachment.
Another way to think about it, a female end in the sleeve would require a nipple for every hydrant, since most hydrants come with a female coupling. This would pose a serious problem should you have any issue with the loose nipple in the bottom of a deep hydrant.
